YSWUG Late Winter Meeting – Thursday March 17th with Kevin Berni of the SolidWorks UI Team

Winter Meeting Re Cap: Our last meeting last week was real fun with about 16 people in attendance to hear fromMichael Steeves from Quest Integration giving his SolidWorks World presentation on how to create some fun animations using SolidWorks Composer (and how to brew some beer) along with Chris Scarlett from ED&I who presented on how to create a 3D Sketch in a sketch driven Sheet Metal Assembly.  Please visit our website for additional information. 

Late Winter Meeting:  Is coming up on Thursday, March 17th, 6 – 8pm, at Yakima Maker Space with a visit fromKevin Berni of SolidWorks UI Team discussing some of the new enhancements with the User Interface of SolidWorks 2016 and 2017 plus potentially another presenter that is yet to be determined.

In Short -  we will:  Eat some pizza and drink some pop, hear a presentation from Kevin Berni, win some cool raffle prizes and exploreYakima Maker Space.  Details follow:

 

PRESENTATIONS: 

We will then hear from Kevin Berni who will give us an introduction to the new SolidWorks 2016 with its various enhancements and a tour of the new user interface (see image nearby).  You don’t want to miss this meeting, it will be informative and provide a lively discussion on the process for new product development and current software enhancements.

We may also hear from Tyson Diaz-Lapham from 3D Connexion who will briefly demonstrate some of his company’s CAD and 3D mice.

Chris Scarlett may also share the model from the “Model Mania” contest at the recent SolidWorks Word. 

Bios:

Kevin Berni R&D, Senior Manager, User Experience Design, DS SOLIDWORKS 
Kevin is a 6 year veteran of DS SOLIDWORKS and has been working on SOLIDWORKS Desktop software since 2009. Kevin started at SOLIDWORKS organizing and overseeing the user research program, helping users give their feedback and test new features before they made it into the software. He has contributed to the design and workflows of a wide variety of features in SOLIDWORKS, from search in Tools>Options to Routing to breadcrumbs and selection sets. Kevin now manages the team responsible for the user experience for SOLIDWORKS Desktop products and he is responsible for making sure that the software is efficient to use, easy to learn, and a pleasure to work with. Kevin will share a look at the user interface for SOLIDWORKS 2016 and give some insight into how the software is researched, designed, and tested with users.

RAFFLE: A raffle drawing will be held at the end of the meeting with various prizes from our meeting sponsors including: Rapid which will be providing various $25 gift certificates and other fun prizes.  There will also be somegreat new prizes from the SolidWorks Users Group Network

Upcoming Meetings:  We have a number of presenters in the wings for our summer and fall meetings including Gemma Welch of DriveWorks who would like to present on SolidWorks automation techniques that her company offers - Phil Sluder of Triaxial Design who will show his SolidWorks World presentation on Tips and Tricks that has developed over the years and potentially Paul Parise of Convergent Technologies who is a frequent presenter at SolidWorks World and will present on using sketch blocks achieve desired component motion in the realm of engine and robotic design.  Stay tuned for additional information.  I am always open to suggestions for any future meetings.  

News: Our meeting follows the 20th anniversary celebration of the Seattle Area SolidWorks Power Users Group SASPUG on Tuesday March 15th.  All are welcome to join this celebration.  Please make contact if you are interested in coming.   

Meeting Coordinator: I would like some help with some group activities which provides an opportunity for becoming the future group leader.  The leadership position comes with perks like a free conference pass to SolidWorks World every year plus all the goodies and parties that go with it.  Please let me know if you are interested so we can work together on putting together our meetings.

Yakima Maker Space is new in Yakima and provides “…workshops and creative outlets for children and adults, a collaborative making environment, and a flexible facility.”  According to the founders John and Wendy, Wednesdays are their “Open Hardware Night” so they may be able to talk a bit and give us a tour.  If you are at all curious about the maker environment and 3D printers you won’t want to miss this meeting.
