This three day course is designed to teach the basics of the blacksmith arts. Class will consist of lecture & demonstration, followed by hands workshop designed to teach the 7 fundamentals of forging. Students will learn shop safety, beginning metallurgy, tool crafting, proper technique, and more. Students will get to keep the basic tools they craft. This class is a prerequisite for independent usage of the forge at YMS.
FEE: Members: $295; Non-members: $325
THINGS TO BRING:
Notebook and pencils. (Bring your camera phone to take pictures and video)
Dress: ALL clothing must be made of 100% natural fiber. NO SYNTHETICS OR
BLENDS (no nylon, polyester, etc).
Recommended: comfortable boots, denim pants, tee shirt & optional over shirt,
hat or bandanna to keep hair managed.
REQUIRED SAFETY GEAR:
◦ Safety glasses or goggles. (Recommend Umerex Goggles from Oxarc.)
◦ Hearing protection.
◦ Leather gloves. (Recommend loose fit welder's gloves with gauntlet removed.)
Please bring gear that you are comfortable in as you will wear it most of the day.
TOOLS AND MATERIALS:
Tools for course will be provided for class use. You are invited to bring your own
tools if you wish. Instructor may offer unsolicited commentary on tooling. Project
materials for course work will be provided.
MEALS: Bring your own sack lunch, libations, and snacks.
HOURS: Friday 6p-9p, Saturday 9a-12n, Saturday 1p-5p, Sunday 1p-5p.
